Trains from Cusco to Machu Picchu

Since 2010 the travelers who want to visit Machu Picchu have more options to reach the Inca citadel by train after the beginning of operations of two new train companies carrying tourists to Machu Picchu. Now there are 3 companies taking passengers to the Inca ruins. Another change is that trains do not leave anymore from San Pedro train station in Cusco but from Poroy, just outside of the city. From Cusco to Poroy and viceversa passengers have to take a bus or a taxi (30 minutes ride). If you join one of our tours to Machu Picchu we include the transportation between Poroy and Cusco.

The journey from Poroy to Machu Picchu by train is around 3 hours. Another option to shorten it is leaving from Ollantaytambo. The train ride from there is only 1.5 hours. Ollantaytambo can be reached by bus or taxi from Cusco. From this town there are more trains leaving to Machu Picchu than from Poroy and train tickets tend to be cheaper too.

Train companies and services

It offers different schedules from Poroy and Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu and viceversa, also different types of trains like the exclusive Hiram Bingham, the fancy Vistadome, the cool Expedition and the basic Backpacker.

Inca Rail: It has over a year operating the route from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu with 3 schedules (morning, noon and evening). It offers two type of services: Executive and First Class with more leg room.

Andean Railways: This company is the latest starting operations. It plans to offer 3 roundtrip schedules (one in the morning and two at noon) from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu.
