  Salkantay Trek
Share

Location: The Salkantay Trek, also known as the New Inca Trail, is North of Cusco. It reaches a maximum altitude of 4,600 meters (15,180 feet) above sea level at the highest point.

Weather: It's very rainy from December to March, that's why the trail is closed on those months. The rest of the year, it's very sunny and hot during the day, but cold in the night. Temperature drops below 0°C (32°F) at night, especially from June to September.

Surroundings: On the first days, you will see three snow-capped mountains: the Tucarhuay, the Salkantay (6,264 meters / 20,671 feet), and the Huamantay; the views are stunning. On the last days, you will go through the cloud-forest, there the weather is more tropical and the vegetation is lush. You will see waterfalls and fruits plantations along the path. It is amazing how fast the sceneries change along the trail, from snow-capped mountains to banana plantations in only couple of days.

Description (day by day):

The Inca Trail has become harder to book due to the new regulations, and also it has lost its charm due to the crowds of tourists who do it every day. That's the main reason why we are offering a new trail to Machu Picchu that has the beauty of the first one but preserves the sense of adventure and untouched that the Inca Trail has lost.

To complete the journey to Machu Picchu through the Salkantay trek, you need 4 days. You will hike on the first 3 days and camp for 2 nights. The trip is completed by bus and train to Aguas Calientes town where you will stay in a hotel. On the 4th day you will visit Machu Picchu since early in the morning and afterwards you will return to Cuzco by train.

1st day: Cusco to Salkantaypampa
The journey starts early in the morning (5:30 am) with a 2 hours ride to Mollepata (altitude: 2,880 meters / 9,450 feet). After breakfast in this town you will continue your journey on a van for 2 more hours until Soraypampa at 3,850 meters (12,705 feet). From there you will do a hike to the nearby "Tucarway" lagoon to take pictures of the snow-capped mountains.

Once back in Soraypampa you will eat lunch and afterwards you will start the hike to the campsite. It takes 2 to 3 hours to reach Salkantaypampa at 4,100 meters (13,450 feet). From the campsite is possible to take pictures of the magestic Salkantay mountain (altitude: 6,264 meters / 20,550 feet). Also, in the night you will be able to see many stars including the Southern Cross.

2nd day: From Salkantaypampa to Colpachaca
Once you have eaten breakfast, you will continue with the hike. From the beginning the stunning views of the surrounding mountains will take your breath. The first part takes 2 hours to the highest point of the trail, the Salkantay pass at 4,600 meters (15,180 ft). There is a switch path section called "7 turns", it is the hardest part of the day, but fortunately it isn't long. Then you will reach a lagoon of turquoise waters. From there the trails gets narrower until it reaches the pass.

After taking pictures at the Salkantay pass, you will hike for 3 to 4 hours downhill to the Andenes campsite at 3,300 meters (10,830 feet), there you will lunch. Along the way you will leave behind the rocky lands to enter into a lush forest. After lunch you will continue for other 3 hours to the Colpachaca campsite at 2,800 meters (9,190 feet). There you will dinner and camp for the night.

3rd day: From Colpachaca to Aguas Calientes
After breakfast, you will hike for 5 hours through a tropical forest surrounded by coffee beans and bananas plantations. You will see many orchids as well along the trail that follows the path of a river. Once at the Playa settlement at 2,350 meters (7,710 feet), you will eat lunch. Afterwards you will ride on a bus for 1 hour and a half until the train station, there you will take the train to Aguas Calientes town. After a 1 hour train ride you will reach this curious town at the foot of the Machu Picchu mountain. There you will stay in a comfortable hotel with a nice hot-shower.

4th day: Machu Picchu
Early in the morning you will take the bus to Machu Picchu. The bus ride is 25 minutes to the Inca city, once there you will have a guided tour for 2 hours, and then you will have free time to explore the site by yourself. You will be among the first tourists in the site, before the crowds arriving with the train at noon. In the afternoon, you will take the train back to Cusco.
