PERU facts

Location and geography:
PERU is located on the central west coast of South America.  This privileged location gives our country and amazing diversity of landscapes and environments.  The country is divided into 3 large regions: the coast (beaches bathed by the Pacific Ocean), the Andes (snow-capped mountains with fertile valleys), and the Amazonian jungle.

Population and Language:
Peru has a population of 24 millions inhabitants. The official language is Spanish, and in the highlands people speak “Quechua” (a native language) too. In the Peruvian Amazon (jungle) are other 55 languages. Only few people speak English, so it's kind of difficult to travel by yourself if you don't speak Spanish.

Currency:
Our currency is the “Nuevo Soles” and the exchange rate is US$ 1.00 = S/ 2.75 nuevos soles. It's very easy  to exchange dollars, because it is like our second currency. In many places (restaurants, travel agencies, hotels, stores, etc.) you can pay in dollars. You can get also dollars from ATM, and exchange it for "soles" in every bank. Don't be surprise that some prices are in US dollars.

Entry Requirements:
You don’t need to request a Visa to enter to Peru, on your arrival the Immigration Officers will give you immediately a TOURIST VISA for 3 months. Only citizens from African (except South Africa) and Asian (except Japan) countries need to request a Visa in a Peruvian Embassy in their countries.

Vaccination:
You don’t need vaccination to enter to Peru, nevertheless, to go to the rainforest (Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, Manu, etc.) you have to get vaccinations against Yellow Fever and Malaria.  In the rest of the country, only be careful with the water you drink, but don't worry, it's easy to buy bottled water.
