Maggie
hiking the short Inca trail to Machu Picchu
(June 2005)
One of the most enjoyable parts of my
expedition to Peru was, in fact, the Inca Trail. Of course it started with my
fundamental amusement with taking the early train, which was so interesting.
Passing by the mountains, seeing the sunshine over the landscape, and going
through all the little towns was completely enlightening and made the journey to
our initial destination a great way to start off the hike.
The sweetest lunch was provided to us just before we began to start the hike.
The weather was nice, not too hot nor cold. I was in complete bliss in the
sunshine, and the flowers and orchids were just basking in its rays. It sounds
so cheesy, but everything was just perfect.
The hike continued, with certain cultural and historical sites along the way.
Since I took this trip as a course requirement, I noted almost everything that I
observed, which was beneficial when I returned. Absorbing all of the information
from our amazing guide and learning was so fulfilling. But if someone may not
enjoy all the facts and figures, nothing is as rewarding as seeing Machu Picchu
from a distance as you finally reach the end of the trail. It is mind blowing to
think that you just walked the very same kilometers that natives had walked
hundreds of years ago. It brought me an incredible sense of appreciation and
astonishment. I highly recommend this aspect of the trip.
