Lindsay and Yvonne on the Inca trail

(September 2004)

Trekking the old Inca trail is done and dusted now. Having walked, climbed, stepped and run along crazy uneven paths for 4 days, we made it to Machu Picchu in one piece.

Such an amazing place, I couldn’t believe I was actually standing looking at the ruins with my own eyes. The trek there was equally great. Camping in the middle of the mountains in the freezing cold in little tents having eaten great food prepared and carried by mega porters. Hiking at the altitude is a whole different story. As soon as you start walking (never minding climbing all 60 million steps) you are out of breath, lungs are hurting and will to live draining away. But for some reason you keep this up for hours on end every day.

In Puno we spent a night on an island on lake Titicaca (highest navigable lake in the world 3,900m). We stayed with a family there, which was all organized through our tour, but it wasn’t all wonderful as we still can’t speak any proper Spanish, so communication was minimal. But we still had fun and did lots of dancing at the “fiesta” that night.
