Location: It's
located
on the
Eastern slopes of the Northern Andes, close to the border with Ecuador. The altitude is
2,300 meters or 7,600 ft. above sea level.
Climate: It's temperate, with a yearly mean temperature of 22°C (72°F) with heavy rain, especially from December to March. The nights are cool.
Landscapes: Cloud forest and high jungle, with mounts covered by thick vegetation. It are also many lagoons and waterfalls. The unique, warm and rainy climate, and the steep, complex topography produce a lush and diverse flora (ferns, orchids and bromeliads). Its fauna includes the Andean bear, the Andean cock-of-the-rocks and the rare oil bird, the only nocturnal bird that feeds on fruit.
History:
This region was the development center of Chachapoyas culture, before the
Incas, which is responsible for the majority of the archaeological centers in
the zone. The impressive citadel
of Kuelap has a great extension over a mount of thick vegetation.
It’s also interesting to visit the cemeteries of cultures before the
Incas, with sarcophagus and tombs
that
look like
chambers
built on the
rocky
hillsides
of the mountains. If anytime you wanted to feel like an adventurous
archaeologist this is the place you must visit and discover.
Culture
and folklore:
There are a diversity of
communities and ethnic
groups which conserve their language, folklore and culture.
We can mention the "aguarunas" and the "huambisas". The most important festivities are celebrated the first week of July,
when the local people celebrate the Raymillacta and later, the festivity of San Juan de
Bagua. It’s a great opportunity
to appreciate its folklore and try its cuisine.
Activities: You can explore the jungle, stay with native communities and enjoy the nature as well as navigate through the rivers that give birth to the Amazon River. You can also take long walks to the archaeological ruins through the dense jungle. Our advice is to hire a local guide or get a tour to travel here, you can get one in Cajamarca or Chachapoyas.
